It's another typical Georgia winter, warm, tee-shirt weather one day and freezing cold the next. At least there are still enough days to get out and putter around the yard. Here are some of the things you might consider doing to be ready for the next round of weather.
- Now is a good time for dividing Daylilies and Hosta.
- Transplanting trees and shrubs is best done while they are dormant.
- Plan your garden changes.
- Prune Wax Myrtles, Cherry Laurels and vines to avoid potential ice damage. Be careful of pruning things that have flower buds set for spring.
- Hard or severe pruning is best done while it is still cold. This can get things back in shape quicker when they leaf out in the spring. Again, be careful pruning flowering plants.
- Cut back ornamental grasses, they'll look better when they start to grow.
- Crape Myrtles can be pruned but depending on the form, may or may not be necessary.
- Liriope can be cut back to obtain fresher looking plants in the spring.
- Pre-emergent can be applied to control weeds in turf and beds.
- The ground is saturated from rain water. Now is one of the best times to locate and correct drainage problems.
